Background

Everyday, all around the world, people are forced to flee their homes and seek asylum in countries near and far. They flee alone or with their families; with a few precious family mementos or simply the clothes on their back; with professional degrees and years of experience or simply the hope and dream of a better life somewhere safer.

If you had to flee your home at a moment’s notice and could only take what you could carry in your arms or on your back, what would you grab? Extra clothes? Family photos? Food?  Imagine how that changes if you have a child too young to walk, or a family pet you can’t imagine leaving behind. These are the choices thousands of refugees face every day, and they’re never easy.

To be exact, approximately 42,500 people are displaced every day and there are nearly 60 million people currently displaced worldwide – this is the highest number of displaced people on record.

60 million people – that's more than the populations of California and New York combined. And yet, the refugee crisis is not something most Americans spend time thinking about, talking about, or doing much about. This is the issue that USA for UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) and The Hive, a special projects unite of the UN's Refugee Agency, are here to change. And they're looking to the Tongal community for different ways to reach American audiences and engage them around this issue.

This is where you come in. The Hive and USA for UNHCR want Tongalers to come up with a fresh, unique, and down-right unexpected Video to frame the refugee crisis for American audiences. Bring your unique insight, shareable perspective, artistic approach, animated drama, or any other creative style to help the Hive spread awareness of and re-frame the refugee crisis to be specific to Americans and generate opportunities for engagement by making the refugee situation feel personal while connecting the plight of refugees around the world with audiences here in America and encourage them to learn more at Project Hive and Forced to Flee.

We want you to think differently about this: what would really get Americans to pay attention, not only to the circumstances that drive refugees from their homes but to who refugees are and how they cope with new lives in new countries. Leave the tearjerker stories and heartstrings at home for this Video and focus on creating a Video that will encourage people to want to learn more and do more.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to create a shareable 30-60 second Video, with a 15-second cutdown, that can be used to build knowledge about the refugee crisis and related issues, the first step in moving people towards deeper levels of support.

--Key Marketing Messages:

--Target Audience: Broadly: 300 million Americans. Some specific audiences include college students, midwesterners, anyone not currently involved in refugee advocacy.

--Executional Mandatories:

--Tone: Above all, positive. Audiences should walk away from your Video inspired to learn and do more to help the refugee crisis, not disheartened by the magnitude of this international crisis.

--Exposure:

This Project will be worth a total of $15,000 and consists of three (3) Phases: an Idea Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: IDEA  – Tell us your Idea for the USA for UNHCR Refugee Awareness Video Project in 140 characters or less.  Remember, an Idea (What is an Idea Phase?) is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video.  As always, Ideas should be clever and engaging.  The two (2) winning Idea creators will receive $250 each and a 5% one-time residual payment for any winning Video based on their Idea. (That means if your winning Idea is the basis for the Video, you will receive $500.) see Video Phase Payout details for more information.

PHASE 2: PITCH - Submit your Pitch (What is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on the winning Idea from the previous Phase using:

The most compelling Pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will each receive $3,000 to help create the Video.  Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winner will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase.  So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an $11,000 Video prize (subject to a deduction for one-time 5% residual payment to the eligible Idea winner). For an example of an effective Pitch, check out The Indie Machines winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – The winner from the Pitch Phase will create a 30-60 second Video with a 15-second cutdown based upon their winning Pitch.

NOTE: The 30-60 second Video and 15-second cutdown are both due at the close of the Video Phase. Please upload them as separate videos when submitting your Videos.

--Video Phase Payout: The Winner of the Video Phase will earn $11,000 (less any 5% one-time residual payment paid to the Idea winner).

--Music:  Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Audioblocks, Killer Tracks and Epidemic Sound. Any of which can be used to source music for your Video submission to this Project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form.
