Background

There are certain albums that remain constants in our lives. Whether you’re a burgeoning adolescent trying to define who you are, an insufferable all-knowing college student or even a full-fledged adult with a screaming kid or two, these albums transcend all life phases and stay fixtures in our music collections.

In 1984 Bob Marley’s iconic hits album Legend was released. It is an embodiment of the remarkable life and recording career of one of reggae music’s most important figures. To commemorate this extraordinary album and musician Universal Music Enterprises is releasing the Legend 30th Anniversary Edition on July 1 and now YOU have a chance to make a music video for one of its biggest hits – One Love!

In partnership with Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Tuff Gong International and Universal Music want you to make a new and compelling music video for this iconic track. This is your opportunity to create a music video for a truly timeless song by one of music’s greatest singer-songwriters. Please read the Objectives section to get all the details on this one of a kind project!

Objectives

The goal of this project is to create a 3-4 minute music video for the Bob Marley song One Love. They are looking for a new visual identity for this legendary track, one that conveys themes of social connectedness, “we’re all in this together,” and making the world a better place. Please see below for some important things to avoid but other than that you have full creative license to make something awesome and captivating!

--Executional Mandatories

Along with the audio file of the song we’ve also included the lyrics to One Love in the Assets tab.

Beginning and End Cards – The winning filmmakers will also be required to create end and beginning cards. Please see the below instructions.

The cards need to have the below layout and copy. Anything in red is the actual copy you need to use.

Details

This Project will be worth a total of $15,000 and consists of 3 Phases: an Idea Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: IDEA  – Tell us your Idea for a One Love music video in 140 characters or less. Remember, an Idea (What is an Idea Phase?) is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video. As always, Ideas should be clever and engaging. Each winning Idea creator will receive $250, a copy of the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Legend and a 5% one-time residual payment for any winning Videos based on their Idea. (That means if your winning Idea is the basis for the 1st place Video, you will receive $450, the 2nd place Video $150) – see Video Phase Payout details for more information.

PHASE 2: PITCH - Submit your Pitch (What Is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on one of the winning Ideas from the previous Phase using:

The 1 most compelling Pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will receive $2,500 to help create the Video. Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winner will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase. So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an additional $3,000, at a minimum, and have a chance to compete for the $9,000 First Place video prize (subject to deduction for one-time 5% residual payment to eligible Idea winners). For an example of an effective Pitch, check out Erik Beck’s winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – The winner from the Pitch Phase will each create a Video based upon their winning Pitch. All other creators are invited to enter a Wildcard (What Is a Wildcard?) submission that can be based on one of the winning Ideas from the previous Phase or a totally original concept that is not based on any winning material from the Idea Phase.  The Judges will score all Wildcard submissions and the 1 highest scoring Wildcard Video along with the winning Video submitted by the Pitch winner will be scored to determine the standings for the Video Phase.  Remember, the Pitch winner, along with one Wildcard creator, will receive prizes.

--Video Phase Payout: Winners of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes:

1st place - $9,000, a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and a copy of the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Legend.

*A year’s supply equates to 24 tubs of the flavors of the winner's choosing, for which the winner will receive redeemable coupons at their local retailer or scoop shop.

2nd Place - $3,000 and a copy of the 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Legend.

--Referral: Any Tongal member who refers one of the winning Video creators in this Project using the Tongal “Invite Friends” functionality will receive a referral fee equal to 5% of the amount won. That’s a potential $600 in bonus cash just for telling all of your talented friends about this Project! Check out more about our Referral Program in FAQ.
