Background

Business Name:

New Hope Ecotech

Describe what your business or product does:

New Hope Ecotech offers a software solution to track and audit the recycling activity of informal and underpaid recyclers in Brazil. With the logistics software system and rigorous controls, New Hope guarantees that a specific amount of material has in fact been recycled. It then issues a reverse logistic certification similar to a carbon credit. We then sell these credits directly to manufacturers so that they may fulfil their government mandated recycling obligation created by Brazilian government in 2010. New Hope Ecotech shares the profits with all the recyclers fairly and pays them for the actual service of collecting and sorting recyclables.

What do you consider to be your biggest competitive advantage?

We are the only available software in the market that enables manufacturing corporations to invest in waste management in a reliable and traceable manner which guarantees the proof of fulfillment of recycling targets. We are also the most economic option available in the market, since our technology allows manufacturing companies to pay values proportionally to what was effectively produced and sold. Finally, we are the most inclusive type of investment a manufacturing company can make in waste management reverse logistic, because we make sure to value the work done by thousands of individual waste pickers.

What do you want consumers to know about your business?

We want the consumer to understand the context in which the business was created. Please see the information below about the creation of our company and what we do:

“Since August 2014, a new National Waste Management Policy has been put in place in Brazil based on the “polluter pays” principle, which means that all CPG manufacturers are now mandated by law to collect and recycle the packaging materials they have inserted in the market. The recycling rate’s targets are progressive and very aggressive. For instance, we must double the recycling rate for paper to 80% by 2019! Not achieving such targets means paying fines and answering for civil liabilities!

Different manufacturers have come with different reactions for the policy. Some have created a Coalition to discuss some terms directly with regulators; others are building up their own reverse logistics systems from the ground, buying trucks and distribution centers. Third party consulting firms made an estimate cost of that law for manufactures and it ranges from $30M to $3B dollars!

What if there was an alternative world, where a system of collection and recycling is already in place and one could just pay for the recollection service and fulfil its regulatory mandate? Actually this world already exists, is very efficient and is responsible for 80% of current recycling rates in Brazil. It’s an informal world, a supply-chain of millions of individual waste pickers and small aggregators that are already performing the activities of recollection and recycling in exchange of the materials’ market value, but aren’t paid for the actual recycling service they provide.

Our solution connects this informal chain with the formal manufactures that must pay for the collection services. Manufactures don’t need to invest in CAPEX intensive logistics and hope that its operations will bring their recycling targets. They can just leverage a current logistics system, pay for the service and insure their compliance. A logistic service that brings insurance and new hope for you.”

Objectives

What should be the focus of this video?

This video should do no more than explain the context in which the company was born and the overview of the service that we provide. We also want to explain briefly the overall system operations i.e. how the data is inserted and how the manufacturing companies track the data in their end.

Take a look at this presentation for more details: https://mediasite.kellogg.northwestern.edu/Mediasite/Play/0f8ec06d344c4b899ff3866da30d91ec1d?AuthTicket

What do you want people to do after seeing this video?

We want the audience to access our website for further information. Website is currently under construction but will be ready by then. The link is: www.nhecotech.com

Intended target for this video:

Decision makers at CPG (Consumer Packaging Goods) companies in Brazil who need to decide which policies to implement in their companies in order to reach reverse logistics targets.

What tagline must be incorporated in the video:

Tagline: No waste left behind. No waste picker left behind.

What MUST be included in the video:

What should definitely NOT be included in the video:

Although we a social impact start-up, we are dealing with regulatory and political issues and presenting the idea to corporate clients. We need a light and informative animation that does not look childish. So, please, avoid childish songs and characters.

Do you have any examples of videos or other commercials that would be help the filmmaker understand the tone and/or style you would like for your video?

We have to keep in mind that, although we are speaking about the environment, we are also dealing with business to business clients and regulatory issues.

Some good inspirations are videos that balance emotion with rationality. They have very simple animations, subtle music, very clear messages with a clear beginning and end.

Some examples:

Is there anything else you would like to tell the filmmaker?

We do acknowledge that the business model is very complicated to understand initially. That is precisely why we need a very didactic video!

You can actually base your entire animated video on a 15 minute presentation that we did to explain the business model to an audience at Kellogg Business School. Find the video in this link:
