Below you'll find two great examples of tutorial videos similar to what we're aiming for with this video. The first video is a great example of how a creator (community member Denver Bailey!) hosts the video and guides us through the process with effective cutaways. The second video is a more classic 3D animation tutorial, which might be something you want to factor in for example purposes as well.
REFERENCE VIDEOS FOR INSPIRATION OR TONE:
It takes a lot of skill, knowledge, and experience to excel as a 3D animator, and that can make it difficult to get started in 3D animation, even if you have a ton of desire to learn. While so much of mastering this skillset comes just from practice and time working, getting valuable advice and guidance from an experienced 3D animator can go a long way for creators just starting out. Tongal wants to team up with an experienced 3D animator to help up-and-coming creators learn some of the key basics to this invaluable skill set, so we're asking you to create an educational 3-5 minute YouTube Video Tutorial that introduces aspiring animators to the overall process of 3D animation.
There's obviously a ton of information you could share here, and we don't want to get lost in the weeds; we're envisioning a higher-level overview approach that discusses the principles of 3D animation and the key steps that an animator needs to go through to create a polished render (e.g. design mockups, rigging, UV, texturing, lighting, final lookdev, etc.). This could include a basic run through of getting set up in Maya and/or the Unreal Engine, and the settings/tools one would want to consider, but if you’ve got a different creative approach then we’re all ears!
This is also a good opportunity for the community to get to know you, so feel free to deliver this information in your videos from your own point of view, and share some of your own experiences. The style and presentation format is up to you, and you can put yourself on camera and talk directly to the audience, or you can use a voice over paired with screen recordings; that said, there does need to be a guiding POV to your videos.
With regards to AI content, we will allow tutorials that involve the use of "Supplementary AI" in filmmaking. Supplementary AI typically involves a tool or program that helps filmmakers in post-production by reducing the complexity of difficult or highly technical tasks, making your post-production workflow much more time and cost efficient than traditional tools or methods (e.g. color correction, denoising, frame rate/speed modification, logo blurs & removals etc.). These AI tools allow filmmakers with otherwise limited resources to do things that used to require full teams or weeks of work. With that in mind though, we will NOT accept tutorials that involve the use of "Generative AI." Generative AI creates entirely new and "original" content, but that new and "original" content created is typically based on an enormous library drawn from other artists' existing work, which is aggregated by the AI software without their explicit permission, making it a challenge to clear for legal use by brands.
