Background

Ever been stuck in line at the grocery store behind that one shopper who insists on searching her entire bag for that 50-cents-off-tortellini coupon? Or even worse, have you ever gotten home with all your groceries and realized you forgot to give your coupons to the cashier after you spent hours searching the Sunday paper?

Well if you were a Schnucks customer, you’d have nothing to worry about. Introducing Schnupons – the fun word that equals great additional savings every day without needing a pair of scissors. Just visit Schnucks.com on your home computer or mobile device to create a Schnupon account where you’ll be presented with the latest amazing coupon deals you can now clip digitally and add them to your digital wallet. So the next time you’re in line at Schnucks, just give the cashier your phone number and your Schnupons will automatically be deducted from your total bill. So no more rummaging through your bag for that coupon that may have expired three weeks ago and finding nothing but a dirty tissue.

Simple, right? We’re glad you think so because Schnucks wants you – one very talented Tongal filmmaker – to create a TV commercial to introduce Schnupons to Schnucks shoppers. They’re looking for a clever and upbeat spot that raises awareness of Schnupons and shows shoppers how they can save big money on the most popular food brands.  So tell us your great Ideas for a fun Schnupons TV commercial Idea and check out the Objectives tab below for more details.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to create a 30 second TV commercial (with 10 second cutdown and five still images) that introduces grocery shoppers to the magic of Schnupons, how to register online and how easy it is to start saving right away. Don’t be afraid to play with the name “Schnupon.” It’s a whimsical word so have fun with it when submitting your Ideas for Videos, but remember Schnucks is a wholesome, Midwestern family-owned grocery chain.

Bumper Note: A 10 second end tag/bumper will be provided to you for use in your Video. This means that the runtime of your Video should actually be 20 seconds long to accommodate the bumper.  Please plan your shoot accordingly. The 10 second cutdown does not need to include the bumper. The bumper will be made available during the last week of the Video Phase.

PRE-PRODUCTION NOTE: This project includes a Pre-Production Phase (What is a Pre-Production Phase?). This means you will be required to submit certain items for Approval before moving onto the Video Phase. The Approval items for this project are:

IMPORTANT: No filmmakers may begin shooting their Video until all Approvals are completed and the Video Phase has officially begun. If you begin shooting your Video during the Pre-Production Phase, there is a chance you will need to reshoot (at your own expense) so please don’t jump the gun.

If you’re selected as a Pitch Winner, a Tongal producer will email you to help walk you through the Pre-Production and Approvals process.

NOTE: The 30 second video, 10 second cutdown and five still images are all due at the close of the Video Phase.  Please upload them as separate videos when submitting your Videos.

--Desired Consumer Response:  Schnucks has deals that are relevant to me that help me save time and money.

--Key Marketing Messages:

--Executional Mandatories:

--Tone: Engaging, fun, playful, clever, smart, new and upbeat.

--Exposure: Television broadcast in the St. Louis metro area and digital pre-roll.

--Target Audience: Household gatekeepers, primarily women (70%) with an average age of 35-49. Has a family, with children and she shops at multiple grocery stores.  Lives in the St Louis metro area.

Primary Target Personas

Family Planner and Pleaser: they have a big job to do. They plan for the week, including school lunches, and 5-7 days of meals.  Staying organized and keeping her family humming is her critical mission. “Nourishing” to them means keeping their family balance through meal planning that is considerate, exciting and fun for the family and within the weekly budget.

Value Chaser: on a budget and timing a grocery run with payday is critical to keeping food on the table for them and their family. Between inserts they get in the mail, online circulars and what they see in-store, they work hard to find the best deals in and around their town. “Nourishing” to them means knowing they’ve done their due diligence in keeping healthy options on the table for their family and that are within their budget.

Secondary Target Persona

Young, Single and Hungry: they are a bit of procrastinators. It’s not that they don’t like shopping; they just don’t go until they need to, like when all that’s in the fridge is ketchup. They like cooking when inspiration hits and they pay attention to in-store savings.

ADDITIONAL ROUNDS OF REVISIONS: This project contains two rounds of revisions. Please keep this in mind when Pitching.

Project Files Note: Upon project completion, you will need to send a hard drive containing your raw footage and editing project files (Premiere, After Effects, etc.). Tongal will ship you a hard drive and pay for shipping back.

Details

This Project will be worth a total of $30,000 and consists of four Phases: an Idea Phase, a Pitch Phase, a Pre-Production Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: IDEA – Tell us your Idea for a fun Schnupons Video in 140 characters or less. Remember, an Idea (What is an Idea Phase?) is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video. As always, Ideas should be clever and engaging. The winning Idea creators will receive $250 each and a 5% one-time residual payment for any winning Videos based on their Idea. (That means if your winning Idea is the basis for the 1st place Video, you will receive $1,000) – see Video Phase Payout details for more information.

PHASE 2: PITCH - Submit your Pitch (What is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on one of the winning Ideas from the previous Phase using:

The most compelling Pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will each receive $9,500 to help create the Video. Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winners will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase.  So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an additional $20,000 First Place video prize (subject to deduction for one-time 5% residual payment to eligible Idea winners). For an example of an effective Pitch, check out The Indie Machines winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 3: PRE-PRODUCTION – The # of Pitch Winners from the Pitch Phase will enter the Pre-Production Phase (What is a Pre-Production Phase?). During this phase, filmmakers will need to receive the following Approvals from the brand:

No filmmakers may begin shooting their Video until all Approvals are completed and the Video Phase has officially begun. If you begin shooting your Video during the Pre-Production Phase, there is a chance you will need to reshoot (at your own expense) so please don’t jump the gun.

PHASE 4: VIDEO – Once the Pre-Production Phase is complete, the Pitch Winner(s) will each create a preferred length in seconds (i.e. 30-seconds) Video based upon their winning Pitch.

NOTE: The 30 second video, 10 second cutdown and five still images are all due at the close of the Video Phase.  Please upload them as separate videos when submitting your Videos.

--Video Phase Payout: The winner of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes: 1st place $20,000 (less any 5% one-time residual payments paid to the Idea winners as applicable).
