Background

Are you into retrofuturistic space westerns, superpowered time-travel fantasies, or a good old-fashioned haunted house story? As a genre fan, whatever you're into, we know it's awesome. Genre is a pretty big and very inclusive tent, and the only thing it takes to be a fan is that you love what you love, and you fly your fan flag high. With that in mind, SYFY wants to take your passion for genre and use it to create videos that give iconic summer moments a genre-fied twist.

To get an idea of how this might be done, take a look at a few videos from this Halloween and this Winter logo projects.

See how "SYFY" is transformed and revealed in different ways? Your summer-themed videos will be just like those.

Keep in mind though, this isn't a focus on any one franchise or piece of IP, and in fact, we want to avoid that. Think about archetypes and recognizable character types, visuals, and scenes. Ask yourself wild questions like, what does an alien bounty hunter's summer BBQ look like? What's the equivalent of a water gun fight to a wizard? Things like that. Also, while SYFY certainly open to some kind of "micro story," the focus is more about the art and design, and developing a clever or unique way of expressing it in your video.

Objectives

Since SYFY is the network for genre fans, they pretty much live and breathe everything genre, no matter what genre we're talking about – science fiction, fantasy, comic book, horror, or some awesome mash-up - you name it, they celebrate it. In that spirit, for the last year SYFY has been been working with genre fans on an monthly initiative where artists, animators, designers, and directors are given the chance to bring the SYFY logo to life in a series of artistic and incredibly stylish TV spots.

This month, with summer on the way, SYFY wants to put a clever genre spin on a classic summertime scene, and the goal is to end up with a stylish and highly visual TV spot that will bring the SYFY logo to life in an unexpected way, transforming the logo, or revealing it, in the process. This is not about a real "narrative" so much as it is about creating a fun juxtaposition of something that screams "summer!" with something that else that represents a particular genre.
