Background

***Nokia has added notes to the Winning Concepts so please check out the Notes Section below each Concept before crafting your Pitch.***

In 1895, the Lumière brothers - the world’s first filmmakers - showed off, “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat.” According to legend, the 50-second shot of a train barreling toward the camera scared audiences so much that they screamed and fled the theater. Some people just aren’t ready for progress. Well, we hope you are because we’re about to introduce an even more epic jump into the future of storytelling.

Presenting the groundbreaking Nokia OZO VR Camera. That’s VR as in virtual reality. That’s right – the stuff mentioned in every sci-fi movie ever. The OZO lets you record real life and experience it again later via a VR headset. It works just like a movie camera – except it captures visuals and sound in 360, capturing true presence.  Trust us on this, when you see a VR film shot on the OZO, you’ll forget where you are, but feel like you’re there.

Right now, you’re probably having flashbacks to those corny VR rides from the nineties – sitting on a roller coaster or floating over mountains. Forget them because this camera’s going to revolutionize filmmaking and open up a whole new universe of storytelling possibilities. Imagine sitting down to a family dinner – twenty years after it happened. Or being thrown into the middle of a horror movie, except it’s happening to you.

Nokia wants your help defining what’s possible in the new medium and leave any hangups to linear storytelling at the door.   So tell us your Concepts for some amazing and immersive VR short films. Horror, romance, education, adventure, time capsule, combine them all….whatever! Any story that takes advantage of this new medium and shows us something we haven’t seen before. Think “Sleep No More” instead of “Macbeth”.

Nokia will be giving two filmmakers access to the OZO Camera to bring the winning Concepts to life as well as technical and post production support. And here’s the best part: the First Place Video Winner will get to keep their very own OZO! So click over to the Objectives tab to find out more!

Objectives

The goal of this project is create a mind-blowing 120-second narrative VR short film that shows off the types of stories that are now possible with Nokia’s new OZO VR camera. Take advantage of the extra immersion and dimensions provided by the OZO to deliver a Video that’s entertaining and one-of-a-kind.

Nokia will give the two pitch winners access to the OZO Camera, associated hardware and technical guidance. Nokia will help mentor filmmakers throughout production and post-production.

Note to Concept Submitters: Nokia’s looking for Concepts that really take advantage of the added immersion and storytelling possibilities that the OZO provides. Concepts should be narratives not gimmicks. You may include still images and links to video footage to help illustrate your Concept.

Note to Pitch Submitters: OZO captures stereoscopic 3D video through eight (8) synchronized global shutter sensors and spatial audio through eight (8) integrated microphones. Software built for OZO enables real-time 3D viewing, with an innovative playback solution that removes the need to pre-assemble a panoramic image - a time-consuming process with solutions currently in the marketplace.

OZO's filmed content can be published for commercially available VR viewing hardware such as head mounted displays (HMDs), with immersive, full 360-degree imaging and spatially accurate original sound. OZO also integrates into existing professional workflows and works with third-party tools, dramatically simplifying content production at all stages.

BTS Video and Stills: Pitch Winners will need to provide a 60-second Behind-the-scenes video and 10 BTS stills in addition to their 120-second short film. These will be due at the end of the Video Phase deadline.

Details

This Project will be worth a total of $42,000 + VR Camera and consists of three Phases: a Concept Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: CONCEPT – Tell us your Concept for an original 3D VR video in 500 characters or less.  Remember, a Concept is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video. You may also include still images and links to video footage to help illustrate your Concept. The winning Concept creators will receive $1,000.

PHASE 2: PITCH - Submit your Pitch (What is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on one of the winning Concepts from the previous Phase using:

The two most compelling Pitches will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will each receive $20,000 to help create the Video.  Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winners will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase.  So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an additional $2,000, at a minimum, and have a chance to compete for the Nokia OZO Camera First Place video prize. For an example of an effective Pitch, check out The Indie Machines winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – The winners from the Pitch Phase will each create a 120 second Video based upon their winning Pitch (along with a 60 second Behind-the-scenes video and ten BTS still images).

The Judges will score the two winning Videos submitted by Pitch winners to determine the standings for the Video Phase.  Remember, the two Pitch winners will receive prizes.

BTS Video and Stills: Pitch Winners will need to provide a 60-second Behind-the-scenes video and 10 BTS stills in addition to their 120-second short film. These will be due at the end of the Video Phase deadline.

--Video Phase Payout: Winners of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes: 1st place Nokia OZO Camera and 2nd place $2,000.

--Music:  Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Audioblocks, Killer Tracks and Epidemic Sound. Any of which can be used to source music for your Video submission to this Project. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using each of these music providers, click on any of the provider’s names above.

Tongal members interested in a custom music solution for your project are invited to connect with SCORE A SCORE.  They specialize in the creation of custom music, on-demand.
