Background

National Geographic has been a leader in the field of sustainability for decades. Their editorial content consistently features articles on sustainability, including an annual “The Best in Sustainability” honorarium for the travel and tourism industry, “The World’s Top Cities for People and the Planet,” and countless articles on sustainable agriculture, living, recycling, and responsible corporate practices. The content is stunning, innovative, engaging, and most of all, relevant to the emerging group of consumers who care about the environment and our planet today.

Now National Geographic is taking it to the next to build out a new video series for social or traditional digital platforms that will highlight and drive awareness about their deep commitment to sustainability. They’ve got authentic and meaningful stories to tell in this area, but they’re looking to YOU for help in figuring out what kind of stories they should actually tell, and how they should tell them. So ask yourself, what kind of videos have you seen like this that work well? What kind of videos would stand out? Are there particular types of stories, or particular formats, that would capture people’s attention more and help call them to action? Is there some unique approach that National Geographic could own?

It’s a broad ask, because there’s a lot of openness here – for example, you could suggest docu-style videos about specific sustainability efforts, or splashy videos set around attention-grabbing stunts, or even anthemic videos that drive to a compelling call-to-action. The content should be inspiring, visual, and shareable. Your submissions could call out a specific platform, like Facebook or Instagram, but they don’t have to.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to develop an innovative video series Concept about the impact and importance of sustainability efforts to help National Geographic create memorable – and actionable – moments for their audience. National Geographic should see a lift in consumer awareness of their efforts, and the content should appeal especially to the millennial consumer.

--Target Audience: National Geographic is looking to target a group called “Bon Viviants”:

--Tone: Rich, visual, share-worthy and inspiring.

--Exposure: Your Concepts will have an impact on how Nat Geo decides to use the videos that are inspired by those Concepts. Generally, though, they will likely be viewed on social channels, as well as the National Geographic website.
