If the word "Krypton" has you thinking about a man in blue tights or Marlon Brando and a white crystal space crib, then let's start this off with a quick refresher: SYFY’s KRYPTON is set 200 years before the birth of Superman, and it takes place on the man of steel's ill-fated homeworld, following the troubled rise of a young Seg-El, Superman's grandfather.
In Season 1, the planet of Krypton is threatened by the powerful supervillain Braniac, but the surprise arrival of a time-traveling General Zod helps Seg to prevent Krypton's destruction... which then completely changes Superman's timeline and erases his very existence. At the end of Season 1, Seg and Brainiac are sucked into the Phantom Zone, Krypton is taken over by General Zod, and the unstoppable villain Doomsday is set loose. You can watch an in-depth recap HERE. In Season 2, things just get worse for Seg. He'll find himself up against not only Brainiac and Zod, but also Doomsday, and eventually the ultimate intergalactic bastich himself: Lobo. It's pretty much the worst time to be a Kryptonian hero... but if you've got a thing for villains, it's a dream come true. Take a quick look at Season 2 HERE.
Once you're caught up, let's talk about these logo spots. Since SYFY is the network for fans, they've been working with fan creators in an on-going initiative where artists, animators, designers, directors, and makers are given the chance to bring the SYFY logo to life in a series of artistic and incredibly stylish TV spots. You may have seen a few of the other spots that SYFY's already produced, like these:
See how "SYFY" is transformed or revealed in different ways? That's what we're looking to do here, except we'll interpret the SYFY logo through the lens of KRYPTON, its heroes, and its villains. This new batch of videos will be just like those though: all 10 or 15-seconds, and highly visual.
Now, KNEEL BEFORE ZOD! - and check out more details below…
The goal of this project is to create a stylish and highly visual 10 or 15-second video that brings the SYFY logo to life in a style that uniquely celebrates KRYPTON, its heroes, and/or its villains, transforming or revealing the SYFY logo in the process. Watch Krypton and Krypton highlights, think about the iconography, and play off that. This is not about a narrative, and while SYFY is certainly open to some kind of "micro story," the focus is more about the art and design, and developing a clever or unique way of expressing it in your video.
Here's what you need to know:
Below is a collection of promotional assets that might be helpful as inspiration:
* You are not required to use any of these; they're just for inspiration or reference. Additional imagery can be provided in pre-production if needed.
--Target Audience: Fans of Krypton, DC, Superhero and genre content in general. SYFY and Krypton team are shining a spotlight on creators across all mediums who love everything in the genre universe.
--Exposure: Videos will air on SYFY and also be posted on SYFY.com, as well on SYFY’s digital and social platforms.

PHASE 1: PITCH – Submit your Pitch (What is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on one of the winning Ideas from the previous Phase using:
--Pre-Production Commencement Payment: The THREE (3) most compelling Pitches will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will each receive an initial payment of $750 for the commencement of pre-production on the Videos.
For an example of an effective Pitch, check out the Pitch Gallery. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.
PHASE 2: PRE-PRODUCTION – The 3 Pitch Winners from the Pitch Phase will enter the Pre-Production Phase (What is a Pre-Production Phase?). During this phase, filmmakers will need to receive the following Approvals from the brand:
No filmmakers may begin shooting their Video until all Approvals are completed and the Video Phase has officially begun. If you begin shooting your Video during the Pre-Production Phase before you have received final approval, there is a chance you will need to reshoot (at your own expense).
For your convenience we’ve provided some helpful templates to use at your discretion. They include templates for creating a Treatment, Production Budget, Storyboards, Shot List, Call Sheet, and a Music Cue Sheet. They can all be accessed here.
PHASE 3: VIDEO – Once the Pre-Production Phase is complete, the Pitch Winners will each create a 10 or 15-second Video based upon their winning Pitch.
--Music: You will be required to use the SYFY-approved music provider Frequency to source music for your Video submission to this Project. Music from this provider is available only to the Pitch Winners at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. Pitch Winners will be provided with a log-in and access by a Tongal producer once they are selected.
If you are selected as a winner and choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form.
PHASE 4: REVISIONS – Once the Video Phase has closed, the winning submitters will enter the Revisions Phase (What is a Revisions Phase?).During this phase, filmmakers will perform reasonable edits on their Videos according to the Sponsor’s feedback.
PHASE 5: ASSETS DELIVERY – You must also provide all project files, editing sequences and a 1080p .mov master file, using a ProRes, Animation, or Uncompressed Codec in order to submit final payment. You will be responsible for the costs associated the hard drive (if necessary) and shipping.
