Background

Every day, kids are looking at the world differently.  Where many adults see limits and obstacles, kids see opportunities.  Kids are unleashing a powerful force of creativity and resourcefulness that makes the world a better, more hopeful place.

There’s a kid who built his own cardboard arcade, and when his story was told, people from all over the world donated to make sure he could earn an engineering degree some day. Or the teenage girl in Turkey invented a new bioplastic made out of banana peels!

Not enough?  Look what these kids—illiterate and in one of the poorest slums in India—were capable of when MIT professor Sugata Mitra gave them unfettered access to computers and the Internet.

Those are just a few examples – we’re betting that there’s a tremendous amount of awesome Creative Kid stories that haven’t been told yet and that’s where you come in!

Objectives

The goal of this project is to create inspiring, shareable videos championing real life creative kids.  Videos should be empowering, optimistic, and not exceed 5 minutes in length. 60-120 seconds is the sweet spot (with a 30 second cut-down for potential commercial use).

One very important note: the story you submit MUST BE A REAL STORY, as in factual, real-deal, documentary.  Also, the kid in the story must still be…well, you know, a kid aged 12 or younger. The rocket ship you built in your backyard during the summer of ’76 isn’t going to cut it here.

As a general guideline, your story submission should also focus on creative kids who display exceptional resourcefulness and ingenuity.  This is about the kid who builds violins using recycled plastics, not the child prodigy who shreds on a Stradivarius.

Lastly, this should not feel like a commercial for Kix, but should tie back to the brand in an authentic way.  For an example of how this is done effectively, refer to the examples below.

Details

This Project will be worth a total of $35,000 and consists of three Phases: a Story Phase, a Pitch Phase and a Video Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.

PHASE 1: Story – Tell us your Story for KiX Creative Kids in 500 characters or less.  Remember, a Story is not a detailed script; it is a spark of inspiration, or a distillation of what will happen in the Video.  As always, Stories should be original and engaging.  The winning Story creators will receive $1,000 each, and one winner will be paired with the Pitch Winner from the subsequent phase to document their story, and receive a 5% one-time residual payment for any winning Videos based on their Story. (That means if your winning Story is the basis for the 1st place Video, you will receive $800, the 2nd place Video $450 – see Video Phase Payout details for more information.

 • IMPORTANT NOTE TO STORY SUBMITTERS – Payment for a win in this phase will be contingent on your cooperation with the winning filmmaker selected to bring your Story to life. Failure to cooperate may result is disqualification from the project.

PHASE 2: PITCH - Submit your Pitch (What Is a Pitch Phase?) convincing the Sponsor why you should be selected to execute a Video based on one of the winning Stories from the previous Phase using:

The most compelling pitch will be selected and, upon submitting the Winner’s Affidavit and the IP Assignment, will receive $7,000 to help create the Video, this award is higher than normal to cover the Pitch Winner‘s expenses when traveling to the Story Winner’s location to document the Creative Kid's story.  Additionally, upon submitting a Video that satisfies the criteria laid out in your winning Pitch, the Pitch winner will also be GUARANTEED a winning place in the subsequent Video Phase.  So, if your Pitch is selected and you execute your Pitch effectively in your Video submission, you will win an additional $9,000 at a minimum, and have a chance to compete for the $16,000 First Place video prize (subject to deduction for one-time 5% residual payment to eligible Story winners). For an example of an effective Pitch, check out Erik Beck’s winning “3 Artists & 5,000 LEGOs” Pitch video. All Pitches will remain private until after the winner of the Video Phase is announced and the Project is complete.

 • IMPORTANT NOTE TO PITCH SUBMITTERS - If you win in the Pitch Phase, you will be required to make your own travel arrangements to film the Story winner from the previous phase.

PHASE 3: VIDEO – The winner from the Pitch Phase will travel to the Story Winner’s location and create a 60-120 second (5 minute maximum) Video based upon their winning Pitch. All other creators are invited to enter a Wildcard (What Is a Wildcard?) submission that can be based on one of the winning Stories from the previous Phase or a totally original concept that is not based on any winning material from the Story Phase.  Wildcard entries will be required to obtain and show permission from Creative Kid/Creative Kid's parents. The Judges will score all Wildcard submissions and the highest scoring Wildcard Video along with the Pitch winner’s Video will be scored to determine the standings for the Video Phase.  Remember, the Pitch winner, along with one Wildcard creator, will receive prizes.

--Video Phase Payout: Winners of the Video Phase will earn the following prizes: 1st place $16,000 and 2nd place $9,000 (less any 5% one-time residual payments paid to the Story winners, as applicable).

--Music:  Tongal has partnered with three premiere music providers: Audiosocket, Killer Tracks and Music Dealers. Any of which can be used to source music for your Video submission to this Project. You may use up to THREE total tracks per Video submission, and they can come from any of the three providers listed above. Music from these providers is available to registered Tongal members at no charge solely for their incorporation into Submissions to this Project and will not require a separate Music Release Form. To learn more about using each of these music providers, click on any of the provider’s names above.

If you are selected as a winner and choose to use custom/original music, you must fill out and submit our Music Release Form. If you obtain music from other catalog providers, you must purchase the appropriate license at your own expense and submit it with our Music Release Form when you turn in your Video paperwork.

--Referral: Any Tongal member who refers one of the winning Video creators in this Project using the Tongal “Invite Friends” functionality will receive a referral fee equal to 5% of the amount won, capped at $500. That’s a potential $450-$500 in bonus cash just for telling all of your talented friends about this Project! Check out more about our Referral Program in FAQ.
