Background

As with any product or service, insurance has room for improvement. Maybe your premiums seem too high or you were disappointed by a company’s performance. Or maybe no one seems to offer insurance that really meets  your needs. You might think that those are just things we have to accept as part of the benefit of insuring personal belongings like cars, homes, boats and the like.

Allstate is working to change all that, which is why they’re offering you the unique opportunity to tell them how insurance could work better for you. That’s right, Allstate wants to hear your opinions about what can be improved with insurance. But here’s the catch: as with all problems, it needs a solution — and Allstate wants yours, so the second phase of this project will be dedicated to solving the selected problems with personal insurance (car, home, renters, life, motorcycle, and boat).

Objectives

In a 45-90 second live-action or animated video, bring a newly created insurance solution to life – Invent a character and tell a story that conveys the problem, presents the solution, and illustrates the emotional and functional benefits of solving the problem.

Details

This project will be worth a total of $22,000 and will consist of five phases, so there’s a place for all of you to participate, regardless of your skill set.

PHASE 1: PROBLEM – In 140 characters or less, describe a "pain point" or "gripe" about insurance.  For example, "I'm a safe driver, and I don't like the fact that my insurance costs as much as people who I know do not drive safely." The five most relevant problems will be selected as the winners and those creators will be awarded $250 each. Limit five (5) submissions, per member.

PHASE 2: SOLUTION – In 250 characters or less provide a solution to one of the winning pain points. For example, "There should be a way to measure my actual driving that PROVES I'm a safe driver, so I can get a better rate." The five solutions that most effectively and creatively address the problems will be selected as the winners and the creators of those solutions will be awarded $750 each. Limit five (5) submissions, per member.

PHASE 3: SUGGESTIONS – In 140 characters or less, suggest ways to improve the winning solutions from Phase 2.  For example, "You should use a GPS device that tracks where people drive." The judges will select up to 10 suggestions that add value to the proposed solutions, and if yours is selected you’ll earn $20. Limit five (5) submissions, per member.

PHASE 4: PITCH – Using text (500 characters or less), images (storyboards), video, and/or external links (to other supporting assets such as your reel, etc.), give us your Pitch for how YOU would go about producing a video that fulfills the Project Objective. The four most compelling Pitches will be selected and the creators of those Pitches will receive a $500 production budget to produce their Video. Those winners will also be GUARANTEED to place in the subsequent Video Phase. So, if your Pitch is selected, you will earn a minimum of $1,500 with a 1-in-6 shot at the $7,500 first place video prize. Remember your Pitch can include any, and all, of the assets mentioned above, with storyboards being a particularly effective way of conveying your take. To avoid information cascades, all Pitches will remain private until after the video winners of the subsequent phase are announced. Limit five (5) submissions, per member.

Alternatively, even if you don’t win the Pitch Phase, you will still have the opportunity to create a Video based on either one of the five winning Problem/Solution sets, OR, to create a “Wild Card” Video completely of your own creative devices in the subsequent Video Phase. Two such non-Pitch-based videos will be awarded prizes.

PHASE 5: VIDEO – In a 45-90 second live-action or animated video, bring a newly imagined insurance solution to life – Invent a character and tell a story that conveys the problem, presents the solution, and illustrates the emotional and functional benefits of solving the problem. Pitch winners of the previous phase will submit their Videos while all other creators are invited to select either one of the 5 winning Problem/Solution sets as the basis for their Video, OR, enter a “Wild Card” submission that’s not based on any winning material from the previous phases. Obviously, this is a riskier enterprise, as the Project Judges will not have vetted any of base material. However, if you’ve got a wholly original take that you think will knock the Judges socks off, give it a shot! Remember, three winners will be selected from this non-pitch group. Limit five (5) submissions, per member.
