Objectives

For the Red Envelope tradition that's a part of the Chinese New Year, people customarily give gifts of money to their close friends and family as a sign of gratitude, or as a blessing for good fortune in the coming year. In recent times, that tradition has become increasingly digital, but hasn't spread beyond China. This year, PayPal is looking to create an inventive and inspirational :30 video about some kind of New Years Eve person-to-person money transfers between family or friends located in different places - very similar to the Red Envelope - but targeting western audiences. We don't quite know what that transfer involves, so we're turning to you.

The motivation is that when you send money on PayPal, you can add character to it by including a playful illustration, animation, or GIF from PayPal's "Themes" library. You can review some example themes HERE, but PayPal's going to add new themes for New Years Eve too. Ultimately, we want to show NYE themes in action, but that means we need to show people sending money to each other from ALL over the globe - in a way that's inspirational, relatable, and worth actually doing yourself. Are we creating a new tradition? Maybe. It's all going to tie into PayPal's campaign tagline: "Let's make it one to remember."

We know that themes solve two key customer needs related to person-to-person transfers: they help communicate purpose, and emotion. Maybe that helps solve the problem. Here are a couple other creative considerations and challenges that you'll have to help us sort out with your concept:

EXPOSURE: Videos will be distributed globally across multiple channels and platforms, including: Instagram (key social focus), Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, as well as other owned channels and paid media.
