You can interpret "companion" liberally and bring your own particular style, but we've included TWO themes below. It'd be ideal to have one video for each theme. If it helps, read the prompt, and think about how your favorite director would answer it.
- Peculiar Pets - Pets are the most loyal companions, right?!? SYFY wants to know how you'd put a genre spin on your furry (scaly? slimy? steely?) best friend. Does little Buddy become a superhero at night? Or a cyborg trying to take over the world? Maybe your "guard animal" has three heads. Up to you!
- Cosmic Companions - We're talking besties here. Pals, partners, mates, buddies, amigas, homies, bros, sistas - you get it. Maybe there's even a romantic spark there too. Think about how your favorite genre archetypes find companionship in this cruel and lonely multidimensional universe we all share. Who's bitching about their day over a brew with a supervillain? Who's in the co-pilot seat when that space wizard jumps to lightspeed? Who's the dwarf's co-conspirator?
SYFY has found the most successful videos are the ones that cleverly integrate the SYFY logo into the scene. The logo shouldn't feel like an afterthought; instead, it should be revealed or transformed in an unexpected way. Check out some of our favorite SYFY logo videos below for inspiration.
SYFY is the Alpha and the Omega of genre. They've got everything from cyberpunk sci-fi to futuristic fantasy and the boldest, bloodiest horror film you've ever seen. Superheroes, cyborgs, monsters, manga, crossovers, comics - hell, mash them all together if you want. Raise your freak flag high, SYFY's got you, and then let's talk once again about their logo initiative, where artists, animators, designers, and directors are given the chance to bring the SYFY logo to life in an artistic and incredibly cool TV spot.
For this batch, SYFY wants you to create TWO different :10 or :15 logo videos that revolve around the concept of "companions" in science fiction, fantasy, horror, or comic books. You can get more info on the theme in the Background / Additional Details, but we're really talking about peculiar pets and best pals.
Please pitch concepts for both videos in your treatment. You can include a few different concepts, or even submit multiple pitches, to cover your bases. The goal is to end up with two stylish and highly visual TV spots that will upend the audience's expectations, bringing the SYFY logo to life in an unexpected way, and transforming or revealing the SYFY logo in the process. Also, SYFY's open to live action approaches. We understand live action is hard given the current circumstances, so it's okay if your video has a DIY / homemade feel.
Our priority is to make sure everyone is safe. Along with that, we’re working really hard to keep people working during this strange time. Our advice here is to submit only if you feel you can do something within the anticipated timeline that ensures everyone's safety given today's reality.
DELIVERABLES:
- Two :10 or :15 logo videos (16x9)
- Two :10 or :15 logo videos (1x1) - You may simply crop your 16x9 videos, but the logo must be safe, and you may deliver a second version specifically designed for 1x1 if you prefer.
TIMELINE: For the full project timeline please see the Assets tab.
EXPOSURE: Videos will air on SYFY and also be posted on SYFY.com, as well on SYFY’s digital and social platforms.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Adult fans of genre content.
TONE: Funny, creepy, scary, bad-ass, magical, mysterious, nostalgic – any tone can work as long as you remember this is for adults. What do you want to see?
EXECUTIONAL MANDATORIES:
- "Genre" refers to science fiction, fantasy, superheroes, comic books, and horror, but it can be anything that falls under those categories, including something that combines more than one. Think about sub-genres too - science-fiction and horror include a ton of different styles and variations - and how genres have evolved over time and in different mediums. Don't fall back on generic elements like witches and UFOs; we see those all the time, and they're not that exciting.
- You MUST pitch concepts for BOTH themes outlined in the Background / Additional Details section.
- All work MUST be original, and should NOT include or reference existing IP or characters. Any persons, places or things rendered should be of the artist’s own creation and should not be referential of any existing properties.
- This is for artists, animators, designers, editors, and filmmakers; any medium can work (including live action), including 2D animation, stop-motion animation, claymation, creative motion graphics, mixed media, etc. 3D animation is acceptable, but hyperrealistic VFX work is difficult given the timeline and budget. If it's live action, DIY/home-made can work too.
- Your video MUST end with the horizontal SYFY logo, and the logo should be on screen for a minimum of 3 seconds. It must end in the sizing reference position (which you can review, HERE). The logo must be distinct and readable and visually distinct from the background. i.e. the logo should not completely blend into the environment—it’s an essential part of the spot.)
- The design of the SYFY logo itself is open for interpretation though, and SYFY is specifically looking for your unique personal style to come through.
- The “walls” of the logo can be broken if you choose (i.e. a character stepping through the logo; a vine growing beyond the edges of the logo, etc.).
- AVOID voiceover and any text or type that isn’t related to the S-Y-F-Y of the SYFY logo.
- AVOID graphically violent or sexual images, or overtly political subject matter.
